The boys at “South Park” always likes to toss in a big Hollywood movie parody or two in their episodes. Last week they took a swipe at James Cameron’s “Avatar”, and this week it’s Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic “2012″. In the episode, the boys go to the local Splash Town-ish water park, where Cartman gets incense at all the minorities there, while all the peeing in the water results in a massive tsunami of, well, pee destroying the park in a “2012″-ish sequence. It’s all very silly and completely over-the-top ridiculous — you know, like the actual movie.
Watch the full episode here.

We’ve been covering Roland Emmerich’s “2012″ since it was announced in February of 2008. Almost two years later, the film explodes its way into theater this Friday, and no one and nothing is safe. Emmerich and company ponders the end of the world in “2012″ by way of the Maya Calendar, which depending on your belief, either foretells the end of the world in December 2012, or, well, doesn’t. That’s all fine and well, but the real question isn’t whether the Maya Calendar predicts the end of days, but if the movie was worth your time.
This is your open discussion thread for “2012″. If you’ve seen the film, tell us what you thought of it. Liked it? Loved it? Indifferent?

I am one Sci-Fi fan that never tires of films where the aliens come down to Mother Earth and think that we humans will be as easy to conquer as butter, only to see us rise up and deliver a serious lesson in smackdown.
Within this sophisticated genre, “Independance Day” is a classic of the form, testifying to, among other things, Will Smith’s star qualities, the hypnotic attraction of ginormous MotherShips and the beauty of a tidal wave of mini vans and small sedans rolling end over end down 5th avenue.
The director of this masterpiece, Roland Emmerich, soon to demonstrate how to wreck the entire Earth in “2012″, thinks that soon we’ll have not one but two “Independence Day” sequels.
Mr. Emmerich’s thoughts on this:
“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc,” he explained. “‘Independence Day’ was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an [...]

A couple of more pics from Master of Disaster Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster porn, “2012″. These features more of the ladies of “2012″, including Thandie Newton as the Prez’s daughter, and Amanda Peet as the suffering wife of John Cusack’s Everyman Hero character. “2012″ ravages your city November 13, 2009, which should give you a three year head start on that whole apocalypse deal.
Roland Emmerich has an early Xmas present ready for all you fans of fine, tasteful and hysterical disaster movies. “2012″ will enrich all our Sci-Fi Holiday preparations with absolutely photo realistic footage of mother Earth undergoing an extreme makeover.
In the crumbly aftermath, who will remain? What will their lives be like? According to Entertainment Weekly, Roland is planning a sequel to “2012″ but this time as a series, called, in fine sequential style, “2013″. Emmerich and Howard Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice) are in talks to do a show that will follow the Earthbound survivors of the really big disaster. The Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice connection really scares me but the concept is pretty awesome. A post apocalyptic drama. Nice.

I am confident in reporting that in “2012″, an imminent digital masterpiece by director Roland Emmerich, your favorite phallic monument or architectural wonder is going to be completely squashed. However, in deciding which statue, building, city or structure was going to be tidal waved, rolled, or dropped core-ward toward the spicy molten center of mother Earth, Roland had to be careful, because political correctness is taken a bit more seriously in some places.
Roland was thinking of cracking the Kaaba, the cube shaped thingy in the center of Mecca, where Muslim pilgrims come during the Hajj. Roland’s thoughts on this follow.
“Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit,” Emmerich says. “But my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. … We have to all … in the Western world … think about this. You can actually … let … Christian symbols fall apart, but if you [...]

My significant spouse and I are debating whether to go to “2012″. I, naturally, am firmly in the “Yup” camp as destruction of this quality and scope comes perhaps once in a Sci-Fi movie going lifetime. The spouse unit thinks that maybe the movie could be depressing and perhaps a “cryer”. A sobbing wife in public is a troubling thing, fraught with hormonal minefields with plenty of room for stupid husbandy fumblings. So, I may go alone and make it a reporters outing. I’m with you Roland!
Here’s an interview with John Cusak, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Amanda Peet as they wax on about their feelings about that date thing and their experiences working on the film. Thanks Comingsoon.
A snip:
Q: What are your personal thoughts of what will happen in 2012?
John Cusack: Do you know the book, “The Return of Quetzalcoatl”? That book, I think, is a little more in line with what I think will happen; a shift in consciousness. That [...]

Here we go with the inevitable onslaught of preview videos for the Nov 13th release of “2012″. No Woody Harrelson in evidence so we have a low humour to depressing disaster ratio.
As 2012 the date and not “2012″ the movie approaches, I’m noticing people are getting a little weirded out. Let me do my due diligence here by reminding you sciencey types (likely all of you) that spreading the word to the less logical is a happy thing to do. It’s probably a lot of the same people that say there is no global warming that also worry that some celestial alignment will rip the planet into bite sized pieces (sigh). Do your bit to reflect the light of reason into those dark and scary places. Thank Comingsoon for the vids.

Watching the trailers for Roland Emmerich’s Disaster Porn epic, “2012″, it appears that separate from the films potential quality, the special effects look freaktastic and wonderfully over the top.
Not all the wreckage and ruin dished out in “2012″ is via CGI. Some of the effects are old fashioned sets. I love to see how they go about making movies the old school way and this video, compliments of ComingSoon, showcases the behind the scenes production work required to give “2012″ it’s real life and energy.

Besides the big warning, you know, the one where the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar ends, finishing up the whole sordid 5125 year business of walking along as happy bipeds (unless you got sacrificed after losing a football game) on or about Dec 21 or 23 in 2012, those prognosticating Mayans foretold another less widely known disaster, concerning a certain German movie director.
The Onion has dug up the details and I think that the Mayans may have this one right. Roland Emmerich’s “2012″ arrives as prophesied Nov 13. Let’s hope that Woody’s end is quick.

You will just not believe the lengths that Roland Emmerich, the director of the speeding train without breaks called “2012″, imminently to blow your mind in a multiplex near you, is willing to go to ruin Earth Day forever. Good old Roland is going to redefine the word smithereens.
The cast in “2012″ is really pretty awesome. Some personal faves are in it like cranky Mr. John Cusack, Woody Harrelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor. You may wonder what these fine thespians have to do in a feature presentation whose sole purpose is to showcase the complete and utter destruction of the planet Earth by the most gratuitous means necessary. Some enterprising editor out in the internets has cut and pasted the fine acting bits from the extended trailer just to show us what we have in store from a drama school point of view. It is illuminating. But what did you expect really? “2012″ starts Nov 13th. Thanks Cinematical.

Wouldn’t it be funny if, one day, we discovered that Roland Emmerich, the director of “2012″, has a personal grudge against the planet that would explain why he’s always destroying it, over and over and over again? Just thinking. New pics and posters for “2012″ after the jump.

“2012″ coming in Nov, looks to be the disaster movie to end all disaster movies. Roland Emmerich, the director, has toyed around in the past with disaster. He has blown up historic buildings of note (Independence Day), overseen the chaotic rampage of a mythical beast (Godzilla) and really, really screwed around with Mother Nature (The Day After Tomorrow).
But now, Mr. Emmerich has stopped fooling around. He brings his game face to the story of “2012″, a story of the ancient Mayan prophecy of Armageddon. It is in the year 2012 that the Mayan calender ends. In Roland Emmerich’s calendar, our world will end too as a giant piece of space rock settles into Earth’s orbit and let’s just say really throws it’s weight around.
No country knows disaster movies as well as the Japanese. So it is fitting that we have a new trailer, subtitled in Japanese, for your enjoyment. The movie looks really put together well but I find the [...]

In “2012″, according to the great sage and disaster movie maven Roland Emmerich, the Mayans will flip us a cold “I Told You So” from their great cultural Valhalla and our world will end in a dusty, crusty upheaval of tectonic pwnage.
So, to prepare for this fast approaching day, The Institute For Human Continuity has erected a website with a ton of useful information to help you stay alive to the point when your death will REALLY hurt.
“2012″ has a pretty wicked cast including John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and the great Woody Harrelson. “2012″ will be in theatres Nov 13, 2009, well before the fateful day of squishing.

Roland Emmerich really likes to blow stuff up. This is a very good thing. There’s nothing more cathartic than watching a rolling building or a tidal wave power smushing a major city. Disaster movies are just a mountain of feel good. In the upcoming 2012 from Roland Emmerich (Godzilla, Independence Day,etc) , the fur is really going to fly. In earlier trailers for this film there is a highly serious tone. In the trailer below, which you must see, I mean must see, the tone is appropriate for the genre. Less Wagner, more Ren and Stimpy. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy. Thanks Cinematical.

No one destroys the planet like Hollywood. Oh sure, other countries may dabble in disaster and end-of-the-world movies, but let’s face it, when it comes to orchestrating global, planet-ending mayhem, no one does it better than the tech wizards of Hollywood. Which is why Roland Emmerich’s “2012″ is probably going to leave you gaping slack-jawed at the screen as cities are engulfed by oceans, skyscrapers tumble, and John Cusack does his best Tom Cruise impression. Actually, it’s a bit strange to see Cusack in such a big event movie. Mind you, not that you’ll notice much, at least not with all the destruction Emmerich is going to be throwing at you throughout the film. Check out the first full trailer for “2012″ and marvel at mankind’s ability to envision his own destruction. Bravo, special effects guys, bravo.
