Obviously, the planning for “Avatar 2″ and 3 and etc, are well underway. Once you’ve hopped from tree to tree and run screaming through an alien jungle ( a rain forest is what it’s called only if you haven’t been in one) with speedy, tank like dinosaurs intent on pulverizing your most precious appendages, there’s really no point in belabouring the point.
But James Cameron is a crafty and creative dude. He now says that instead of retreading that old wilderness camping trip from “Avatar 1″, next time we’ll be going deep into the seas of Pandora and perhaps elsewhere.
In an interview with the L.A. Times:
We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.
This gets my attention. Although the first “Avatar” rocked pretty hard, I wasn’t that thrilled for more of the same. 3D oceans with 3D critters would be pretty interesting. A return to “The Abyss” perhaps? Thanks Io9 for the word.
