Bryan Singer to Investigate the Mayan Calendar with SyFy

Bryan Singer's Mayan TV Mini-Series, Sci-Fi TV News — By Nix on August 5, 2009

For an ancient artifact made by a bunch of guys who essentially lived in the jungles many thousands of years ago, the Mayan Calendar sure is getting a lot of airplay in recent years. Of course, the fact that people say the calendar predicts the end of the world in the year 2012 might have something to do with it. Hollywood loves that stuff.

Besides the dozen or so straight-to-cable movies about the 2012 End of the World scenario that regularly appears on the SyFy Channel, the cable net is now going to put some money into it themselves. THR says the network has teamed up with “Superman Returns” director Bryan Singer to make a mini-series about the Mayan calendar. The as-yet-untitled mini-series is said to be “an incredibly exciting and fast-paced adventure” in the vein of the “National Treasure” films and “The Da Vinci Code”. This means, of course, lots of puzzles to be solved and all that clever stuff.

In a statement, Singer also seems to indicate his story is going to be a little alien-ish.

“I have always been fascinated by the various myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the Mayan calendar. It’s the most accurate calendar created by man, so accurate that many believe its origins may lie elsewhere. Regardless of what you believe, what is truly mysterious about this, is that a number of cultures and religions, including Hinduism, all point toward a period of great upheaval which happens to coincide with the final month and year marked by the calendar. Our story will explore whether we are truly alone in the universe, and other related mysteries, all of which are set against the backdrop of an incredibly exciting and fast-paced adventure.”

Translations: it’s all the fault of aliens.

Of course, I could be wrong.
