Bryan Singer to Direct a Battlestar Galactica Movie with Larson?

Battlestar Galactica: The Movie, Sci-Fi Movie News — By Nix on August 12, 2009

Well this should make a lot of our readers happy. The last time I posted about a “Battlestar Galactica” movie based on the old show (and not the Sci Fi Channel reboot) with original director Glen A. Larson attached, a lot of fans made their voices known that they would dig it. Now comes word that Bryan Singer may end up directing that relaunch.

Via HitFix comes word that “Superman Returns” and “X-Men” director Bryan Singer is close to signing on with Universal to bring “Battlestar Galactica” back to the big screen as producer and director. This isn’t the first time Singer has circled the BSG universe. Way back in 2001, Singer was supposed to direct a BSG movie involving a Cylon sneak attack, but that movie was shelved after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, or what new BSG actor Edward James Olmos enigmatically referred to as “the 9/11 situation”.

Now with Ron Moore’s rebooted Battlestar Galactica TV show having run its course for the most part, it would appear that Universal is ready to get back in the BSG business with original show creator Glen A. Larson and now, Bryan Singer. Although Singer is known as a “gritty” film director, he would have had to developed a major change of opinion when it comes to the property to go the Ron Moore route. My guess is that he, along with Larson, will do something more in line with the original show, perhaps as a “Next Generation” type.

More details should come to light when Universal makes an official announcement. If one comes, that is. Hitfix says the studio is just now approaching Singer, so we’re far from anything concrete happening anytime soon.

UPDATE: Variety has now confirmed the story, and says Singer is now attached to produce and direct. Articles are saying Singer’s version, to be produced along with Glen A. Larson, will stand on its own apart from the original series and Ron Moore’s reboot.

Say, Greg, maybe we should have passed on the wax and shine before duty?
