Here’s an intriguing concept for a TV show:

The high-concept drama ["Smokers"], based on an original idea by Vaughan, is about a documentary crew following working class heroes who exterminate alien threats in deep space.

The only part I’m not sure about is the whole “documentary crew” angle. That almost always translates into “shaky cam” bullshit. And I hate shaky cam bullshit.

In any case, “Smokers” is from comic book writer turned TV writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Y: The Last Man”, “Runaways”, before he started writing for “Lost”), and producer Sam Raimi. Raimi does an obscene amount of “producing” work, so don’t take it with any grain of salt. He just signs the checks and slaps his name on things, that’s how it works when you’re as famous as Sam Raimi.

The bad news? “Smokers” will be debuting on the FOX network. Yes, FOX. The show that killed the last 95% of all great sci-fi/genre shows in the known universe. That’s the major negative. On the positve, they seem to be the only ones who will even greenlight a great sci-fi/genre show in the first place, so I suppose it’s a catch-22.

More about “Smokers” when we get them…
