Recently, Gore Verbinski, director of the 3 Pirates of the Caribbean movies, stepped down from the movie adaptation of the amazing Bioshock video game. Unfortunately, the budget of Bioshock was getting huge (160 million) and was growing steadily. Universal was forced to shut down the movie while it looked for a cheaper location outside of the United States to film. Since the international location will require more of Gore’s time he was forced to give up directing (he will still produce).
Gore’s own words:
“The bottom line is it has to shoot out of the States for budget reasons and my schedule may be prohibitive. There’s a great script and a really interesting cast. It really comes down to the financial model now. Big movies are just not being shot in the States. I’m weighing whether I can physically go the U.K. or Australia or one of those other places with a tax rebate for a year-and-a-half.”
So, who will now direct Bioshock? Universal has now hired Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, best known for his directing work on 28 weeks later to take over from the very capable Verbinski.
The Bioshock story synopsis:
A plane-crash survivor discovers an underwater utopia of sinister origins.
Hopefully, Universal is still willing to spend a good hunk of change on Bioshock. It’s just not a low budget kind of story. Thanks /film for the news.
