Those of you following the regular Cinema Obscura posts (all 3 of you) will have no doubt noticed that I skipped last week. There was really no reason for it as I was not busy doing anything else, so I suppose you could say I ’slacked off.’ I am slacker! So bad.. This week, in honor of the late and definitely great Patrick Swayze we will take a gander at Steel Dawn (1987), not to be confused with Red Dawn also starring Swayze.
The Basics
A lone swordsman named Nomad (now that’s creative) wonders the desert remains of earth after the Third World War in search for revenge. He soon happens upon a fledgling settlement, and falls for a girl and saves the settlers from a bunch of bad people. Yes, very typical post-ap scenario.
The Review
Ah, but there’s a twist see. Nomad’s weapon of choice isn’t a gun, or harpoon. It’s a sword! Okay, still a little derivative but the movie [...]

Shhh, don’t make a sound because this week we’ll be tiptoeing our way around The Quiet Earth (1985).
The Basics
A scientist finds himself all alone in a big city after everyone in has been wiped out. He spends his time looking for other survivors all the while suspecting government shenanigans as being responsible for everyone dying. Sound familiar? Yep, yet another post-apocalyptic scenario (gonna start calling it post-ap…or maybe not…). Soon other people start popping out amidst the devastation and they all try and uncover why they’re the only survivors left alive.
The Review
Again! If you’re looking for flashy special effects and massive explosions and messed up looking aliens hopping about everywhere then stop reading and go away. Coming from the same place as everyone’s favorite post-ap movie Lord of the Rings, this New Zealand film takes a good hard look at what it actually might be like to be the last person on earth. You may have thought that you’ve seen [...]

In case you didn’t know already, Oxford University Press release the first ever science fiction dictionary entitled Brave New Words in April of this year. The first thing that hits you is the title and how it is in itself a clever play on words. Lovely. Here are some of the features;
* First citation-based dictionary of science fiction terms
* The first historical dictionary devoted entirely to science fiction, illustrating the significant effect that the language of science fiction has had on the English language as a whole
* Each entry includes both definitions and extensive historical citations of the word’s usage
* The New England Science Fiction Association has provided editorial oversight through an advisory board

For those of you who don’t like subtitles, bugger off. For the rest of you that enjoy enriching your entertainment choices with dashes of culture, read on. This week we take a look at one of Poland’s best sci-fi exports from director Piotr Szulkin entitled O-Bi, O-Ba, The End of Civilization (1985).
The Basics
The setup is familiar. A nuclear holocaust wipes out most of humanity and those that remain are left to survive the harsh aftermath. The brunt of the plot is set underground and focuses on the exploits of the survivors as they await a mysterious vessel known as ‘the Ark’ to come and rescue them. Meanwhile on the outside a ravaging nuclear winter ensues.
The Review
You’ve never heard of this movie, but it’s not because it sucks. It doesn’t, in fact it’s very good. It’s meager budget constraints and slight 80’s feel aside, O-Bi, O-Ba is laden with dark humor and political/religious symbolism that is both slyly subtle and playfully [...]

You may have heard of Ralph Bakshi and by extension this movie, but most people haven’t. At least most people don’t remember it, but I do. I remember everything…and so let’s remember Wizards (1977) together shall we?
The Basics
Picture a post apocalyptic scenario involving mutants, wizards, nazis, elves, assassins and fairies. Pretty groovy huh? The plot centers around two brothers; both powerful wizards yet each on the opposite end of the Good/Evil scale. They are both born after the great holocaust which was caused by the wars of mankind, in the wake of which sprung out a world replete with creatures of fantasy. The evil wizard, known as Blackwolf is intent on ruling the world while the good wizard Avatar and others try to stop him. It’s Lord of the Rings meets (Insert favorite post-apocalyptic story of which there are dozens).
The Review
Well, this is a mixed bag of a movie. It’s has moments of sheer beauty and there are other times [...]

Welcome to the second edition of Cinema Obscura. Today we will be taking a look at an oldie but goodie called Brainstorm (1983), starring Christopher Walken.
The Basics
A group of scientists develop a device they dub ‘The Hat’ which is a headset that transmits the brain’s activity directly to a computer and allows these recordings to be experienced by other people. The success of this scientific project leads to plenty of intrigue involving the military, and the subject of death is prominently featured. This was Natalie Wood’s final film.
The Review
Despite suffering from being oftentimes painfully dated due to some of the technology used, the ideas and concepts explored in this movie are well represented due to the strength of the cast. Directed by Douglas Trumbull and starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood, Brainstorm is as much a story about the human experience as it is a science fiction thriller. The chemistry between Walken and Wood helps the audience to invest [...]

Spoiler Alert: Robert Carlyle reveals possible key plot points in the following passages so if you really don’t want to know then don’t read past this sentence.
Heading the cast of the upcoming latest Stargate spinoff, Robert Carlyle was all to keen to give ScifiWire a bit of an inside scoop as to what to expect from the new show. According to Carlyle, his character Nicholas Rush will be getting into some interesting predicaments,
“I was floating in a tank, and that was kind of bizarre in actual fact,” Carlyle said in a group interview last month at Comic-Con in San Diego. “A bunch of aliens actually got me. Of course, Rush is left on a planet, which is what he deserves, and then the aliens come and pick him up and stick him in a tank. So that’s where you suddenly pick me up again, floating in it. So that was quite cool.”
And that’s not all,

Sci-Fi Cinema Obscura will be your weekly guide to science fiction goodness that you likely have not heard of. This week we take a look at a film from Korea called 2009 Lost Memories (2002).
The Basics
Far into the future in the year 2009, Korea has become part of the Japanese empire due to an event in the past that was altered. The story centers on two special agents of the JBI who attempt to crack down on pro-Korean nationalists who’ve been plotting to bring down the Japanese regime in their country. They intend to do this by attempting to go back to the moment in history which changed it’s natural course.
The Review
Decent film with a decent enough plot and some nice action sequences. There were a few instances where the special effects just looked bad but that is usually expected from smaller budget fare. The cinematography is however gorgeous and this is really typical of most films from South Korea. [...]

The director of the original Ghostbusters during a special anniversary screening of the film said that the time is right to bring back the franchise for a third installment. The screening was held to support the release of Ghostbuster on Blu Ray.
“We’re going to get a screenplay in a short time,” Reitman said Wednesday night. “We’re going to see how it is. There’s something in the zeitgeist of the world right now that it feels appropriate. There are some very talented people writing the screenplay. All of our fingers are crossed.”
Here is an excerpt of the interview with Reitman,
What finally made a Ghostbusters 3 a real possibility?
Reitman: I actually think the combination of both the Blu-ray release and the new game sort of awakened the thirst of at least the creators of the movie to start to rethink it more seriously, the possibility of a sequel. It’s something that’s been sort of dormant in our minds, really, for the last [...]

Niice! I’ve been looking forward to seeing some more sci-fi projects to come out of China. To be honest I’ve been getting tired of the epic period pieces, so this news comes as a nice breath of fresh air. I like fresh air. I also like sci-fi, so it’s all good.
To be directed by Benny Chan (Invisible Target) the movie will have a budget of about 100 million yuan (that’s little over 14.5 mil US) and will involve such science fiction mainstays as superhuman abilities and paranormal phenomena. Kung-Fu buffs need not worry as director Benny Chan intends on making sure there will be plenty of that distinctly Chinese martial art on display. This might be the Matrix of the East, who knows! Shooting will begin next year but keep an eye on this space as we’ll be following this one closely.

The trailer for the new season of the Dr. Who spinoff series, titled Torchwood:Children of Earth shows tidbits of what I think to be a promising set of episodes. It’s got creepy kids, paranormal investigators (including the lovely Eve Myles), British accents and, well, creepy kids. Truth be told I haven’t yet caught the first two seasons but by the looks of this trailer I don’t think it would be time badly spent at all. Another interesting point about this new season though is that it will forgo the usual 13 episode structure in favor of only 5 episodes. Not sure why they did that but I hope it works out for ‘em.
Take a peek here…

Thanks SciFiWire.

According to the BBC a feature length spin-off of the long lived British sci-fi series Dr. Who is in development. Barely a blurb in the linked article, this news comes as a pleasant surprise to those who might be fans of the series (and who isn’t?) and I for one look forward to it. No word yet on whether David Tennant is going to play the good doctor on the big screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the film were to be ‘Hollywoodized’ and rebooted for the general masses with a young, hip and sexy new cast. Or maybe it just might turn out to be good, who the heck knows. For those of you who’ve never seen the show, shame on you. You can catch it on the SciFi Channel, check your local listings.

According to Ain’t It Cool News this movie has been in post production for about 2 years now, following initial fan screenings which showed the film for all its flaws. The movie is an autobiographical account of director Patrick Read Johnson’s early years as a budding filmmaker on the cusp of the release of the original Star Wars. From the trailer (thanks Starlog) I’d say it looks pretty good, see for yourself.

It looks like Steven Spielberg is going to be giving us more aliens. On TV this time around though.
Apparently TNT has put an order in for an as of yet unnamed alien invasion show from DreamWorks TV which will be centered around the aftermath of a global invasion by what I’m guessing to be some bad ETs. I’m picturing the tag line of this thing to be ‘ETs Go Home’ (get it?) and the cleverly done initial promos will feature ever so slight glimpses of the invasion without even showing the aliens so as to get us curious to what they’ll look like.
Just guessing here. Anyway, apparently the guy who wrote Saving Private Ryan is behind this as well so at least we know it’ll have…um…lot’s of dying? Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for this news.

The chopping block has been somewhat unkind to science fiction lately. Eleventh Hour is the latest show to get cancelled as reported by Entertainment Weekly columnist Michael Ausiello. I personally am saddened by this devastating news and…no I’m not really, but I’m sure there are the token few fans of the show that are mourning its loss, right? Anyone? Hello?!?
Eleventh Hour was based on a British series and focused on a scientist (Rufus Sewell of Dark City fame) and an FBI agent (Marley Shelton of who the heck knows what) who investigated strange scientific phenomena. What with a fantastic premise like that how did this thing get cancelled?

There is no denying the contribution these characters have made to a genre otherwise dominated by men, and this list represents five of my favorite star hoppin’, cyborg bustin’ and alien blastin’ women in all the universe. They are bold, resourceful, intelligent, sexy and tough as nails. I know I wouldn’t mess with them that’s for sure, but enough jabbering on. Let’s get down to business.

5. Dana Scully of X-Files
The constantly skeptical and always serious Agent Scully certainly had her plate full. After being partnered with Fox ‘Spooky’ Mulder her life would never be the same, and she endured more than a lifetime’s fair share of danger while barely flinching through it all. Could you do that? I don’t think so. It’s true that most people didn’t take to Scully until about the second season of the show, mostly because of how cold she was toward Mulder who was admittedly more likable. It didn’t take long however for her to [...]

Marc Millis, former head of NASA’s Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project, explains in this video how it might be possible to achieve superluminal travel using our current understanding of the universe. All I know is, sign me up for that please! This guy seems to know what he’s talking about so take a look for yourselves.

Now the next step is figuring out how to make those replicators a reality, because when I have a craving for ‘tea, Earl Grey, hot!’ it must be satisfied immediately. That and green chicks, ’cause they seem to give it up easily enough…

How appropriate is it that the latest Star Trek film is being beamed aboard the International Space Station? Very much so, really.
Paramount sent a copy of the movie to NASA and then it was directly uplinked to the space station for the viewing pleasure of astronaut Michael Barrat and two of his crew mates. Michael Barrat credits his love for space exploration to the original series, citing it as his inspiration,
“I remember watching the original Star Trek series and, like many of my NASA co-workers, was inspired by the idea of people from all nations coming together to explore space,” Barratt said in a statement provided by Paramount. “Star Trek blended adventure, discovery, intelligence and story telling that assumes a positive future for humanity. The International Space Station is a real step in that direction, with many nations sharing in an adventure the world can be proud of.”

Mike Horn, currently the editor for Current TV is the crazy genius behind that video that all too lovingly depicts the Enterprise being vaporized by the Death Star. A clever mashup of two of sci-fi-doms most enduring franchises, that video is just one of two he created. It also appears that his videos were not sanctioned by the venerable George Lucas as we may have previously conjectured,
“Lucas has not called me yet,” Horn says, “but if he did, I’d certainly express my gratitude toward him for making my childhood so magical. His cultural and technological legacy is enormous. My favorite Star Wars films are the original trilogy, and of the newer trilogy, I’d oddly have to say Phantom Menace was my favorite.”

Here’s the other video he did,
