Greetings Sci-Fi enthusiasts and any other type of nerd out there. Those of you in and around the Carolinas (That is North and South Carolina for the geographically challenged) will be pleased to know that Myrtle Beach will host to this years XCon World, a multi-genre spanning convention with a healthy dose of science fiction…of course. Following is the press release which contains all the details you’ll need to know; hope to see you there!

Shhh, don’t make a sound because this week we’ll be tiptoeing our way around The Quiet Earth (1985).
The Basics
Hello nerds, geeks and poindexters of the world. Hold on to your pocket protector and thick rimmed glasses held together with tape because there is cause to rejoice.
In case you didn’t know already, Oxford University Press release the first ever science fiction dictionary entitled Brave New Words in April of this year. The first thing that hits you is the title and how it is in itself a clever play on words. Lovely. Here are some of the features;

For those of you who don’t like subtitles, bugger off. For the rest of you that enjoy enriching your entertainment choices with dashes of culture, read on. This week we take a look at one of Poland’s best sci-fi exports from director Piotr Szulkin entitled O-Bi, O-Ba, The End of Civilization (1985).

You may have heard of Ralph Bakshi and by extension this movie, but most people haven’t. At least most people don’t remember it, but I do. I remember everything…and so let’s remember Wizards (1977) together shall we?
The Basics

Welcome to the second edition of Cinema Obscura. Today we will be taking a look at an oldie but goodie called Brainstorm (1983), starring Christopher Walken.
The Basics
Heading the cast of the upcoming latest Stargate spinoff, Robert Carlyle was all to keen to give ScifiWire a bit of an inside scoop as to what to expect from the new show. According to Carlyle, his character Nicholas Rush will be getting into some interesting predicaments,

Sci-Fi Cinema Obscura will be your weekly guide to science fiction goodness that you likely have not heard of. This week we take a look at a film from Korea called 2009 Lost Memories (2002).
The director of the original Ghostbusters during a special anniversary screening of the film said that the time is right to bring back the franchise for a third installment. The screening was held to support the release of Ghostbuster on Blu Ray.
Niice! I’ve been looking forward to seeing some more sci-fi projects to come out of China. To be honest I’ve been getting tired of the epic period pieces, so this news comes as a nice breath of fresh air. I like fresh air. I also like sci-fi, so it’s all good.
The trailer for the new season of the Dr. Who spinoff series, titled Torchwood:Children of Earth shows tidbits of what I think to be a promising set of episodes. It’s got creepy kids, paranormal investigators (including the lovely Eve Myles), British accents and, well, creepy kids. Truth be told I haven’t yet caught the first two seasons but by the looks of this trailer I don’t think it would be time badly spent at all. Another interesting point about this new season though is that it will forgo the usual 13 episode structure in favor of only 5 episodes. Not sure why they did that but I hope it works out for ‘em.
According to the BBC a feature length spin-off of the long lived British sci-fi series Dr. Who is in development. Barely a blurb in the linked article, this news comes as a pleasant surprise to those who might be fans of the series (and who isn’t?) and I for one look forward to it. No word yet on whether David Tennant is going to play the good doctor on the big screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the film were to be ‘Hollywoodized’ and rebooted for the general masses with a young, hip and sexy new cast. Or maybe it just might turn out to be good, who the heck knows. For those of you who’ve never seen the show, shame on you. You can catch it on the SciFi Channel, check your local listings.
According to Ain’t It Cool News this movie has been in post production for about 2 years now, following initial fan screenings which showed the film for all its flaws. The movie is an autobiographical account of director Patrick Read Johnson’s early years as a budding filmmaker on the cusp of the release of the original Star Wars. From the trailer (thanks Starlog) I’d say it looks pretty good, see for yourself.
It looks like Steven Spielberg is going to be giving us more aliens. On TV this time around though.
