Stephen King himself mentioned earlier this month that his latest book, the gargantuan tome “Under the Dome” (the book clocks in at a respectable 1088 pages) will be headed to the small screen, and now we know a little bit more about the project: besides King, the project will, in all likelihood, headed to a cable network in limited series (aka mini-series) form courtesy of Steven Spielberg and his Dreamworks studio.
Variety reports that the TV division of Spielberg’s Dreamworks has optioned the King novel, and will be looking to create an “event series” based on it. This will be the second time King and Spielberg have worked together, counting the author’s “The Talisman”, which has yet to reach the screen, though IMDB.com has it listed as a possible mini-series in 2010.
King’s “Under the Dome” revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force field suddenly and without warning descends on a small vacation town in Maine. Cut off from [...]

Brad Pitt producing a movie based on a videogame? Brad Pitt actually starring in said videogame turned movie? Hey, stranger things have happened. Like, say, a guy name Uwe Boll buying up and making movies based on videogames, and people actually allowing him to do so. It could be worst, I suppose, and Pitt would certainly look pretty good as a Rocketeer-ish badass fighting aliens.
The game in question is “Dark Void”, and Pitt’s Plan B has partnered up with Reliance BIG Entertainment to turn the property into a movie, with Pitt possibly stepping into the main character’s rocket pack as star. The third-person game centers on a a cargo pilot named Will who, after crashing in the infamous Bermuda Triangle, ends up in a parallel universe where a band of humans must fight an alien threat they had long been thought extinct. Will and the other humans are outmanned but have a number of weapons and powers to help them [...]

The boys at “South Park” always likes to toss in a big Hollywood movie parody or two in their episodes. Last week they took a swipe at James Cameron’s “Avatar”, and this week it’s Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic “2012″. In the episode, the boys go to the local Splash Town-ish water park, where Cartman gets incense at all the minorities there, while all the peeing in the water results in a massive tsunami of, well, pee destroying the park in a “2012″-ish sequence. It’s all very silly and completely over-the-top ridiculous — you know, like the actual movie.

Let’s face it, with a name like Percy Jackson, he better be a very cool musician masquerading as a high school teenager, or the descendant of Greek Gods. In the case of our hero in “Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, it’s the latter. Man, he must get chicks. Even if they have snakes for hair. Check out the recently released International trailer for “Percy Jackson”, from director Chris Columbus, who knows a thing or two about launching big Hollywood movie franchises. No doubt everyone involved in “Percy Jackson” is hoping for a “Harry Potter” effect.
It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson’s Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they’re not happy: Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy’s mother. As Percy finds himself caught [...]

NBC’s canceled “The Listener” starred Craig Olejnik as a telepathic paramedic who uses his gift to solve crimes. That’s a nifty little premise, but I never got around to watching it, and apparently neither did anyone else. I never knew when NBC was showing the show, so it just flew by its first season and was summarily canceled when not enough people tuned in. The Peacock network may not have had any faith in the show, but the Canadians think otherwise.
Variety reports that “The Listener” has received a 13-episode Season 2 order from Canada’s CTV network and its sister sci-fi/fantasy cable channel Space, while Fox International will handle the show’s international distribution.
Ratings for the show in the States were abysmal, but like all genre shows, I’m sure there are fans in the States hoping for a U.S. channel to pick up its second season. According to Shaftesbury chairman-CEO Christina Jennings, whose company produces “The Listener”, they’ll concentrate on producing [...]

Meanwhile, the Resistance of Two – aka FBI Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Father Jack (Joel Gretsch) — continue their quest to find strength in numbers. Step one: find everyone who was at the warehouse that fateful night, including the AWOL Georgie (David Richmond-Peck). For his part, former V sleeper soldier turned human sympathizer Ryan (Morris Chestnut) goes in search of the remaining members of the V Fifth Column, a group of V rebels now scattered to the wind. As we learn toward the end of tonight’s episode, “A Bright New Day”, you just never know when those spunky Fifth Columns will show up next.
Apparently uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer (”Transformers”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Disney have been looking at possibly turning the comic book title “Alien Legion” into a feature-length movie for a while now. A live-action movie, at that. USAToday currently has a long article on the birth and status of “Alien Legion” the comic book, and towards the end they mention that a script for the movie is currently in the works by writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, the duo behind “Wanted” and “3:10 to Yuma”.
During my comic book days, I picked up an “Alien Legion” issue or two, but to be honest, I don’t really know all that much about it. Here’s more:
Launched in 1984 as the pet project of series creator Carl Potts, Alien Legion has developed a cult following over the years. The series redefined the military science-fiction genre, telling tales of war and space exploration through the eyes of a rough-and-tumble intergalactic foreign legion.
To be honest with you, I don’t see how Disney wouldn’t make a sequel to “Race to Witch Mountain”, and according to one of the film’s stars, the original did leave room for more stories. Released earlier this year, the movie earned $67 million at the domestic box office, and went on to make $106 million worldwide. That sounds like a recipe for sequels to me. While doing the press junket for his animated sci-fi comedy “Planet 51″, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said as much.
He told Collider:
I’m not quite too sure about a Witch Mountain sequel. Great success breeds a lot of things, including sequels. The storyline was set up for a sequel, so we’ll see. I’m not ruling it out. I just can’t speak to it because I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to any of the guys up at Disney about it.
From there, The Rock automatically switched over to promoting his other kid-friendly comedy “Tooth Fairy” like the [...]

Almost two years later, the film explodes its way into theater this Friday, and no one and nothing is safe. Emmerich and company ponders the end of the world in “2012″ by way of the Maya Calendar, which depending on your belief, either foretells the end of the world in December 2012, or, well, doesn’t. That’s all fine and well, but the real question isn’t whether the Maya Calendar predicts the end of days, but if the movie was worth your time.
This is your open discussion thread for “2012″. If you’ve seen the film, tell us what you thought of it. Liked it? Loved it? Indifferent?

The idea of a “Gattaca” TV show sounds like a winner when I first heard it, but the idea of turning Andrew Niccol’s perfectly honed world into another generic TV cop show on TV? Aw, man, I don’t know, that sounds, well, generic to me. In any case, Gil Grant, who has been assigned to adapt the movie into a TV show for producer Denis Leary recently talked to MTV about his approach to the show.
Grant confirms that Andrew Niccol has nothing to do with the show, will probably have no involvement whatsoever, and for better or worst, Grant plans to introduce a more procedural cop show vibe into “Gattaca”. Grant is no stranger to procedural shows, having worked on the incredibly dull but unfathomably popular “NCIS” shows, as well as the more enjoyable “24″.

Director Shawn Levy has revealed more about his upcoming sci-fi movie “Real Steel”, which is being described as “a father/son action drama set in the near future, surrounding the sport of robot boxing.” If that sounds familiar, it may be because the movie will be based on a short story by the prolific sci-fi/fantasy writer Richard Matheson (”I am Legend”, among many, many others), who previously adapted his story into a “Twilight Zone” episode in 1963 called “Steel”. In the interview, Levy says that the movie won’t be an all-out robot action movie ala “Terminator” or “Transformers”. He also confirms that the top candidate to headline the film is Hugh Jackman.
Levy is known primarily as a comedy director, so this will be his first non-comedy role. Which is good news to anyone who was afraid Levy might turn this thing into a PG-rated gagfest ala the silly and over-the-top “Battle at the Smithsonian” movies.

The second episode of ABC’s new “V” show dropped in the ratings — which is both expected and a little bothersome, according to THR. The bothersome part is that the show was down 27% from its record-setting pilot last week, a notable drop as it marks the largest fall from a premiere for a scripted show all season. The good news? Last week’s numbers were record-setting for a reason, so a drop in numbers from week one to week two was entirely expected.
In all, “V’s” second episode, “There is No Normal Anymore” was watched by 10.7 million viewers and drew a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49. According to THR, those are respectable numbers for a new show, and if the show can maintain it, ABC will realize they have a potential hit on their hands. Or at the very least, a stable show capable of building momentum.

Honestly, I tried to give “Smallville” a chance after ignoring it all these years, but after devoting my undivided attention to three full episodes of the current season, I’ve removed the show from my DVR schedule. I don’t know what it is about the show, maybe it’s the complete uselessness of the Green Arrow character (really, did this guy ever actually manage to win a single fight on the show? because he sure looks like the world’s slickest punching bag in the three episodes I’ve seen him in), or the overly goofy Lois Lane-Clark Kent romance, or the unGodly boring Tess Mercer stuff… Anyways, I really didn’t plan to watch another episode of “Smallville”, but this news may change my mind. At least, for one night.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the CW likes the two Geoff Johns-penned Justice Society episodes so much that instead of showing them as separate standalone episodes throughout the season, they will instead take both episodes [...]

Let’s face it, this isn’t that much of a surprise. The ratings have been abysmal, even with some positives from time-shifted numbers, Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse” never really took off as Fox had expected, or was hoping for after giving it a year two commitment. As it turns out, maybe they should have saved “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” instead — or perhaps, it wouldn’t have mattered anyhow. Of course, it didn’t help putting the genre show on a night that has been given somber nicknames like Friday Night Death Slot and Graveyard Shift. That’s like going on a date with someone name “Body Odor Bob” and then wondering why he smells.
In any case, the official word comes from THR, who reports that the network has officially closed the door on any further adventures of Eliza Dushku and the Dollhouse gang. The network also confirms that the show will return to the airwaves with all-new episodes on December 4th as planned. [...]

I don’t know how the boys over at Latino Review does it, but I do know that they’re one of the more trustworthy movie sites out there when it comes to scripts. Their latest find is the shooting script for “Paranormal Activity” director Oren Peli’s “Area 51″, his latest “found footage” follow-up to “Activity”, which continues to clean up at the box office and turning a tidy (re: humongous) profit from its $11,000 dollar budget. Obviously, “Area 51″ is going to be enjoying a significantly higher budget, which will come in handy because, it would appear, aliens will definitely be making an appearance. Read on below to see how the movie begins. POTENTIAL SPOILERS.
Here’s the film’s set-up:
The film begins much like Paranormal Activity with a dude testing out his brand new handycam. In Area 51, this dude’s name is Chris and he appears to be a typical geek. He has various alien paraphernalia and random computer parts strewn [...]

Wow, I hadn’t even heard of this one until the teaser trailer showed up over at IGN. Of course, DC is pumping these out on a pretty regular basis, so who can keep up with it all? It’s another DC animated movie called “Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths” based on an old “Justice League of America” comic book storyline, and features a good Lex Luthor crossing over to our universe to ask for assistance from the Justice League. It seems in his world, on a parallel Earth, the League is made up of superpowered criminals.
In Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, a “good” Lex Luthor arrives from an alternate universe to recruit the Justice League to help save his Earth from the Crime Syndicate, a gang of villainous characters with virtually identical super powers to the Justice League. What ensues is the ultimate battle of good versus evil in a war that threatens both planets and, through a [...]

So what do you do after you’ve killed your partner of seven years and discovered that he was actually a space alien in disguise? For FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), it means lying through her teeth when her boss and the FBI wonder what’s happened to agent Dale Maddox (Alan Tudyk, who gets two brief cameos in tonight’s episode). There’s good news and bad news for our FBI heroine: the bad news is that Erica, as a good liar as she is, has a very insightful boss (Roark Critchlow) who sees holes in her story, but the good news is that the Visitors know how to cover their tracks. By the time the FBI shows up at the warehouse where the fledging human resistance and Visitor commandos threw down at the end of the pilot, there are no traces of a fight or bodies. Erica is safe … for now. Meanwhile, Father Jack (Joel Gretsch) struggles about what to [...]
