It’s a sci-fi movie that isn’t really a sci-fi movie. Let’s face it, this thing opens as a sci-fi movie, and its premise of a second Earth showing up in our solar system is very sci-fi-ish, but co-writers Mike Cahill (who also directs) and Brit Marling (who also stars) are basically using that angle as an excuse to explore other things like second chances, forgiveness, etc. It’s all very dramatic and “thinking outside the box”, and if you’re into that sort of thing, “Another Earth” looks like it could be really good. Just don’t, you know, go in expecting lasers and aliens and what have you.

In ANOTHER EARTH, Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.

Starring William Mapother, Brit Marling, Jordan Baker, Robin Lord Taylor, and Flint Beverage. Look for it in theaters July 22nd, 2011.
