So yeah, they might really happen after all. Vulture reports that the studio is very keen on making the sequels back-to-back, and while the two films will form a single coherent story, they can also be viewed as stand-alone films. Not sure how that’s going to work, but that’s what they’re saying.
At the moment, the sticking point has to do with Will Smith’s $50 million dollar asking price (for both films), along with director Roland Emmerich’s own high directing fee. As for the scripts, Emmerich and partner Dean Devlin are hammering them out and are expected to turn them into the studio by December. Now it’s just a matter of Fox getting everyone paid and greenlighting the film.
So yes, it’s looking like the sequels really are going to be made. Though with or without Will Smith remains to be seen. Updates to follow.
