George Lucas is living the dream. No matter how many mistakes he makes with the Star Wars universe, I (and just about everyone else) still get excited at the mere suggestion of anything new that’s Star Warsy. Once bitten, twice shy has become 4 or 5 times bitten, Endy still putting hand in lion’s mouth.
In the year 2033, Mexico City has become the perfect city, with perfect workers, and a perfect lifestyle for its citizens. Alas, that’s on the surface. The truth is underneath, and it’s not pretty to look at. Anyone who questions or thinks outside the box are dealt with harshly. Official one-sheet poster for Bruce Willis’ upcoming sci-fi actioner “Surrogates”. Willis co-stars with Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe, Ving Rhames, and is directed by Jonathan Mostow (“Terminator: Rise of the Machines”). The film opens September 25.
After a lot of speculation and rumors about who will be helming the Robert Rodriguez-produced “Predators”, his planned direct sequel to the original “Predator” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, comes word from Rodriguez himself that the director will be … Nimrod Antal. The confirmation comes from Austin, Texas via the boys at AICN, who has an inside line to Rodriguez. As in, the site’s owner Harry Knowles actually lives in the same city and eats with the guy, so yeah, it’s pretty much official.
From the same people who are intent on giving you big-screen movies based on the games “Battleship” and “Candyland” (yes, a movie based on the board game “Candyland”), now comes a movie based on the old arcade game … “Asteroids”. Yes, “Asteroids”. You know, that game where you pilot a triangle “ship” and has to shoot asteroids flying at you from all directions? Yup, that game. They’re making a movie about it. No, I’m totally serious here. Read on.
You have Jessica Biel in a movie and it’s just her voice? What a waste. Oh well, at least there are some funny bits in this first trailer for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest kiddie movie, the CG flick “Planet 51″. The movie sees Johnson playing an astronaut who lands on an alien planet. It’s basically a 1950s comedy, except we’re the aliens and the aliens are us. Get it? Now this is certainly exciting news for fans of Rockne O’Bannon’s brilliant sci-fi show Farscape, which ran on the Sci Fi Channel from 1999 to 2003, and included a mini-series to tie up loose ends. Just got a press release that says the show’s creator and its stars Ben Browder and Claudia Black will be hitting up this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego later this month as part of a special panel to introduce a Farscape DVD mega set that will include all four seasons of the show, courtesy of A&E Home Entertainment and the Jim Henson Company. As someone who has never missed a single episode, this is very good news.
How could you go wrong with a movie starring Paul Giamatti? The guy is a great actor. Put him in a quirky movie involving souls, storage, and Hollywood, and you got yourself a pretty good kooky little movie that should stay around for years. Think of it as “Being John Malkovich” but with Paul Giamatti. Sounds like a trade-up to me! Seven clips from the movie below.
This is good news for sci-fi fans. Variety reports that The Sci Fi Channel (soon to change its name to SyFy) has hired former Angel, Firefly, and X-Files writer Tim Minear to revive the 1980s-90s alien TV show Alien Nation for them. You remember Alien Nation, don’t you? The show spawned a number of made-for-TV movies after the series was canceled. It has a pretty big fan following, and concerned a group of alien slaves whose ship arrives on Earth. The aliens, called Newcomers, must assimilate with the human population, oftentimes with great difficulty.
More news from Michael Bay’s upcoming movie “I am Number Four”, which he will produce along with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks, and possibly direct, though that’s not a given, especially with all the loud rumblings about a “Transformers 3″ coming in less than two years. We already know the film will be about alien teens who hide out on Earth after their planet is destroyed, but what else?
