The facts are, the chances of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse surviving past its first year are slim to none. I just don’t see it happening. Fox seems to have chosen its sci-fi show for 2009, and it’s not Dollhouse. Maybe it was because Fringe came first and scored decent enough numbers for Fox to give it a plumb spot in 2009 behind its juggernaut show American Idol, while slotting Dollhouse in the “death” time slot of Friday nights along with the (probably) equally doomed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

More Eliza Dushku Dollhouse Promos
First Official Images from Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
I’m still not entirely sold on the title (“Revenge of the Fallen”? That sounds like a bad Clapper commercial), but there’s absolutely nothing else about “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen” that I’m not looking forward to. I loved the hell out of the first movie, especially since Michael Bay pretty much delivered the movie I was hoping he would, and getting what you wanted was just so cool. The second one is coming very soon (can you say, Summer 2009?), and here’s your first look at the movie, featuring some explosive shots from the film, and as expected, Michael Bay still knows how to blow stuff up real good.
Sci-Fi Babe Spotlight: Milla Jovovich
I’m not sure if model turned actress Milla Jovovich ever thought her movie career would be filled with so many sci-fi movies, but sci-fi fans sure are happy that’s how it turned out. Her first big sci-fi role was, of course, Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element” in 1997. She followed that up with “Ultraviolet” and all three “Resident Evil” movies. Granted, the “Resident Evil” franchise can be considered horror than sci-fi, but let’s face it, those films stopped being scary after part one and has become one big fantasy/sci-fi franchise since. Didn’t they clone the lead character? That sounds like sci-fi to me.
Boxleitner Back in Tron 2.0, New Monsters vs. Aliens Trailer, Mac vs. PC – Transformers Style!
A couple of sci-fi news for ya today before we head off into the Christmas break for the entire week. First up: news from Comingsoon is that Bruce Boxleitner, who starred in the 1982 original alongside Jeff Bridges, is “is currently filming a role” for the sequel. No word on how big a “role” that is yet, or even the plot of the sequel. Also, here’s the latest trailer for the animated sci-fi comedy “Monsters vs. Aliens”.
Avatar Set: James Cameron and Sam Worthington
The hype surrounding “Avatar”, James Cameron’s first movie in what seems like eons is so huge right now that if the film doesn’t open and shatter every box office record in the known world since the history of time, it might be considered a failure. Just kidding, of course, but not by very much. The anticipation in regards to not just of the story, the sci-fi aspect, but also the advance technology that Cameron is promising, is just major leagues stuff. I hope the man can pull it off, cause it would sure be cool to get more than one Cameron movie per decade…
Judge Dredd Reboot is Coming
What, Sylvester Stallone as Judge Dredd wasn’t good enough for you guys? You gotta reboot the character for the big screen? Okay, why not. Let’s face it, 1995′s “Judge Dredd” was a major disappointment. A big-budget mega disappointment. Okay, okay, it pretty much stunk up the joint, which may be why the guys at 2000AD are already hard at work getting the reboot together for a 2009 start date. Don’t believe me? They said so at their site.
Science Kills in Kevin Sorbo’s New Sci-Fi Actioner
Who doesn’t love parallel Earth stories? “What if’s”, “Elseworlds” — whatever you want to call it, it’s always a blast to see established TV shows take the characters we know and twist them around without worrying about the consequences, since this is just a parallel universe we’re visiting. Star Trek did it quite often, but they always did it well; Stargate SG1 did a couple of them that turned out pretty good, too. But what about a movie based on the parallel world premise? That’s the idea behind Kevin Sorbo’s new sci-fi actioner, “Paradox”.
New Posters and Images From Push
Let’s face it, if you haven’t fantasized about having telekinetic powers and being able to move things with your mind, then you just don’t have any imagination. I think everyone has daydreamed about being able to, say, TK’ing a mug into the back of their boss’s head from all the way across the office at one point or another. That seems to be the main power of Chris Evans’ character in Paul McGuigan’s sci-fi movie “Push”. The film also co-stars Camilla Belle and Dakota Fanning, and is due out in theaters sometime next year. New images and poster from the movie below.
Frank Miller Closer to Buck Rogers Movie
The last time we heard about Frank Miller (of “Sin City” and “300″ fame) being attached to a big-screen revival of “Buck Rogers”, it was still just a rumor. One of those, “It may happen, it may not” kind of deal. Well guess what, it looks like it’s really happening. Or at least, all parties (Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment, the people he recently wrapped up “The Spirit” for) are officially trying to make it happen, and all indications seem to point to the whole shebang coming together. The stars, as they say, seem to be aligning to make this one happen.
RIP 1932-2008: Majel Barrett-Roddenberry
Sad news today from the world of Trek, as we have learned that Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, wife of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, has passed away at the age of 76 from leukemia. If Gene was the vision behind Star Trek, then surely Majel was the voice of the franchise. Besides providing the familiar voice of the Federation computer, Majel also appeared as an actress in the original series playing various characters, as well as The Next Generation, where she played Deanna Troi’s meddlesome mother, Lwaxana, who in-between trying to get her daughter married, also kept a close eye on Captain Picard.
New Images from Race to Witch Mountain
Now that I know for sure “Race to Witch Mountain” is indeed a sci-fi movie (yes, a kiddie adventure sci-fi movie, but sci-fi nevertheless), here are three more images from the movie, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a cabbie who picks up two strange kids with powers being chased by shady men in black. The threesome get help from Carla Gugino, who plays some kind of TV host on a UFO show. Or something to that affect. Together, they have to “race” to the titular Witch Mountain before the Government can stop them. There’s a twist: the kids are actually trying to stop an impending alien invasion, but only if they can reach Witch Mountain!
Keanu Reeves Talks Cowboy Bebop
If you were one of those people hoping that that news of Keanu Reeves playing Spike Spiegel in a live-action movie version of “Cowboy Bebop” were just rumors, well sorry to disappoint you, because it’s very much true and Reeves says as much to MTV. So what exactly did Reeves have to say? He certainly shows real enthusiasm for the property, which I suppose is a good thing. Better to have a leading man who can control the production have a real vested interest in getting things right, then just a hired gun, right?
First Look at Bruce Willis in Surrogates
I’ve been interested in Bruce Willis’ sci-fi movie “Surrogates” the first time I heard about it. It doesn’t just star Willis in a familiar action role (Willis + action almost always guarantees an entertaining movie) but it’s being directed by Jonathan Mostow, who last directed the underrated “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”, which I thought was actually pretty good. Not “T2″ good, mind you, but a pretty good sci-fi action movie. “Surrogates” star Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe and Ving Rhames.
Race to Witch Mountain Poster, Trailer
Go figure. I didn’t even know Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest movie, “Race to Witch Mountain” was even a sci-fi movie, which is why I never bothered covering it. (Sounds like a kiddie action movie to me when I first heard it. Well, it kinda is that, but then some.) Here’s the poster and trailer for the movie, about two kids who turn out to be aliens, and are being pursued by the authorities. They get him from The Rock when they jump into his taxi.
Joseph Kosinski’s Tron 2.0 Casting Begins
There was a lot of buzz about Joseph Kosinski’s “Tron 2.0″ at Comic Con this year, and apparently everyone who saw the test footage that Kosinki shot in order to wow the studio was equally wowed by it. Now a couple of things have become clear about the movie, in particular the plot: it will be a sequel to the 1982 Disney original, and not a reboot/remake, according to this THR article. Also, the film has cast its first two actors, and they just happen to be babes at that — Olivia Wilde, currently spending time on FOX’s House TV show, and Beau Garrett, last seen in the “Fantastic Four” sequel.
